Fourth of July Competitions Cancelled in Lake Placid
from Katie Million, ORDA
" ... we will not be moving forward with the traditional 90M Summer Ski Jump on July 5th & 6th. Because of the very small field we have decided to cancel the USSA event and we will move forward with an exhibition on Saturday, July 5th. The event will no longer be USSA scored or accumulate USSA points, however, there will be a $400 prize purse for the exhibition. The exhibition will also count toward the Art Devlin Cup points. The exhibition will start at 1:00pm on July 5th and the format will be Best 2 of 3 jumps. There will not be an event on July 6th."

[Ed. Note - Last year Steamboat scheduled a training camp and competition in direct conflict with the annual Lake Placid Fourth of July competition. The same Steamboat event this year has sucked away the field from the Lake Placid event which had run continually for more than 50 years. We need better cooperation between organizers, and we need to realize that we are all on the same side! DCW]

What jump is this?

Tom Ricchio sent around a picture of this unknown jump.

Please let us know if you can identify this nice tower.

The surrounding looks like the upper midwest to me [DW].

T. Gary Allen
T. Gary Allen (1917-2007)
(June 2008) We have just learned, eight months too late, of the passing of Gary Allen on Oct. 5, 2007 in Gilford NH. Gary was chairman of the Eastern Ski Jumping Committee for several years during the 1970's and 80's. He took a break from that job to be the first venue manager at the new Olympic jumps in Lake Placid in the lead-up to the 1980 Games. He was Assistant Chief of Competition for the Olympic ski jumping competitions. Gary and his friend Bill Trudgeon were the prime movers in the reopening and updating of the Gunstock jumps in Gilford, near Laconia NH. Gary was inducted into the US Ski Hall of Fame in 1992.
Please share your recollections of Gary.   [ See obit.]
