The Three Day Schedule:
The 2009 National Championships staged in October 2008 were the first Ski Jumping Championships held on a plastic surface rather than on snow. Those Championships were such a success that the U.S. Ski Association decided to do it again in October 2009, again in Lake Placid.
These were officially the 2010 championships, that is, the event for the 2009-2010 season which begins in the summer of 2009. Championship events included Special Jumping for both men and women, and Nordic Combined competition for men, with a schedule (above) just like the inaugural event held one year earlier.
The 2009 championships ran under gray skies with occasional sprinkles and light wind from the north-west.
You will notice that Bill Demong and Johnny Spillane are both missing from the rusults below.
Spillane was recovering from injuries and didn't make the trip. Demong came to Lake Placid, but had recently hurt his shoulder in a roller skiing crash caused by a failure of one of his customized skis. He hopes to be back training in a few days.
National Championship medals were awarded Saturday evening as part of a ceremony to honor Olympians. The ceremony was held in a small park on Main Street in downtown Lake Placid, where Bill Demong (right) who learned his skiing in Lake Placid, gave a nice talk.

The U.S. Nordic Combined Championships was a Nordic Combined Sprint so the
competition consisted of a single jump on the K-90 meter ski jump and a cross
country (roller ski) race of 11.5 km. The jumping scores were taken from the

A gusty wind built as the competitors ran through the trial round and the first round of competition. Chief of Competition Dan Warner found it difficult to give each skier the start signal with fair wind conditions, and several skiers had difficulty in the air.
With three skiers (Johnny Lyons, Chris Lamb and Nick Alexander, all members of Project-X) left to go in the first round of competition, the Competition Jury met and agreed to finish the competition with those last three skiers, but as the meeting went on, Project-X coach Jochen Danneberg asked his three skiers to withdraw and walk down from the top of the ski jump tower. With that, the competition ended.
