Ski Jumps
Lake Placid, NY
October 9-10, 2010

|
The 2010 Flaming Leaves Ski Jumping Festival in Lake Placid included two competitions on the Olympic K-90 meter hill.
The Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) organized a jumping competition on Saturday, October 9, which was part two of the three part Art Devlin Cup series, and which carried some cash prizes in addition to the ORDA medals.
Sunday was a big day, with three competitions. Early in the morning, a bunch of stalwart skiers contested a roller ski race, completing a Nordic combined competition using Saturday's jumping results.
At 11 am, NYSEF coaches and volunteers, with the help and support of ORDA, organized a second K-90 competition.
To finish off the weekend of skiing, NYSEF coaches and volunteers held a small hill competition, with Nordic combined, for junior competitors.
The weekend also included Festival activities for the public, and clinics, meetings, and a reception for USA Ski Jumping.

Peter Frenette of Saranac Lake, NY, flies to victory on Saturday. This 103 meter ride followed an incredible flight of 108 meters which eclipsed the hill record of 105 meters, held by Peter's coach, Clint Jones. This win, combined with a win in July, gives Frenette a big lead in the points race for the Art Devlin Cup. The third and final event of the Devlin Cup race will be the Masters meet at New Years time.

Nordic Combined Team Sprint Relay
Two-man teams, each racer did five laps of a one km loop
Sunday, 8:30 am
|
The Nordic combined boys decided to hold a little NC competition, unofficial, with the race on Sunday morning. Eleven two-man teams were formed and a start list was established, based largely on Saturday's first round jump results.
Three of the teams were given modified start times, just to make a good race.
After all, it was just a fun event. Racers skated on roller skis on a one km. course at the jumping venue that ran from the bottom, up to the big parking lot, then back down. The two members of each team alternated running one km. laps for a total of ten km. per team.

NYSEF Flaming Leaves Ski Jumping Competition
Trial and one Competitive Round on 90 Meter Hill
Sunday, 11:00 am
|
The wind that hampered Saturday's competition strengthened on Sunday and changed to a more difficult direction,
giving coaches and organizers fits! The result was long delays between jumps, and
finally the decision to cancel the second round of competitive jumps. Winners
were decided on the basis of one round of jumping and everybody went home safe.

Bryan Fletcher, Andrew Bliss, Mike Glasder

The long, busy Flaming Leaves weekend of ski jumping ended with a junior competition
organized by NYSEF coaches Casey Colby, Evan Bliss, David McCahill and Margaret Maher, with the help of hardworking NYSEF volunteers. Bliss reports that star jumpers Peter Frenette and Mike Glasder also helped out. This was a late addition to the schedule and so attracted only local skiers. Here are the results, no distances were provided, just total points.
