The 84th annual
Salisbury Ski Jumps
including

  • Friday evening target jumping, under the lights
  • Saturday morning Salisbury Junior Jumping
  • Saturday afternoon Salisbury Invitation Jump
  • Sunday Eastern USSA Ski Jumping Championships

hosted by the
Salisbury Winter Sports Association
at John Satre Hill - Salisbury, Connecticut
February 5-7, 2010

Ski jumpers arriving at Satre hill in Salisbury CT on Friday afternoon found a hill covered with crisp white, man-made snow, undergoing the final raking for Friday evening jumping. Temperatures in the twenties and just the lightest winds made it a super evening for jumping.
Most of the skiers had time for a few practice rides before the first competitive event of the weekend, the Friday evening Target Jump. Organizers set a target a few meters above the critical point (K) and ten jumpers took a shot, trying to land as close as possible to the target without passing it. After the first round of jumping, the field was cut to the six landing closest to the target, but others were welcome to take a second jump as forejumpers (distances in parentheses below). The skiers jumped in order of their first round distances. The field was cut again for the third and final round, and the target was move a couple of meters up the hill to make the competition close. It worked! All three finalists landed right at the mark, one just to the right, two a bit to the left, with Spencer Knickerbocker of Brattleboro taking home the title and the $500 check from event sponsors Churchill Brothers Builders of Sharon CT.

2010 Eastern USSA Ski Jumping Championships
[Final JO Qualifier]
Sunday, February 7

The wind that was forecast for Saturday didn't show up until the evening, but overnight, blustery winds banged the shutters and moaned through the cracks of some of the old homes in histric Salisbury. The wind had abated somewhat by late morning when the big hill was opened for training, and the Eastern Championships were not slowed down significantly by the weather. One of Saturday's competitors withdrew from Sunday's championships with an equipment problem, and a very sore back took out one of the Old Boys, but these two were replace by three new names on the start list.

Nordic Combined enthusiasts gathered on Sunday morning for a cross country race, which was a bit of a miracle given the thin snow cover in the Salisbury area. Unfortunately we are advised that NC results are lost and gone forever. Dreadful sorry!

Each year, the Salisbury Winter Sports Association recognizes several different achievements with special awards, and this year, Spencer Knickerbocker, who hails from Brattleboro but is studying and training in Lake Placid, took home a couple of the top awards (along with cash prizes for two earlier target jumps). Right, Spencer holds the SWSA Cup, awarded to the overall winner of the Eastern Championships. The cup replaces the Satre Trophy which was retired in 2003 by Taylor Hoffman of Lake Placid.

Knickerbocker (below, center) took home the plaque in honor of Sig Evensen, awarded annually to the winner of the Junior Class in the Eastern Championships .

History was made when Nina Lussi (below, left) became the first female jumper to win the Ladies Cup, awarded to the top scorer in the Eastern Championships who is not competing in the winner's class.

Three Special Awards

Mark Breen (above, right) took home his second Earle Murphy & Don West Award as the Eastern Division Champion in the Masters Class. Murphy was stuck in a blizzard and unable to attend and make the presentation, but West (far right) made the trip and did the honors.

The 2010 Junior Olympic Team

The Eastern Championship in Salisbury is the final qualifying event for the team to represent the Eastern Division at the Junior Olympics to be held in late February in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The last item in Sunday's awards program is the announcement and introduction of the Junior Olympic team members. In 2010, the JO event will again include Junior-1 competitors. Three Junior-2 skiers with JO aspirations were "on the bubble", considered very close to the cut-line, but all three skied well in Salisbury and all three were named to the team.

The 2010 JO Team
The 2010 Eastern JO team: Front row, right to left - Nina Lussi, Luke Daniels, Miles Lussi, Matthew Doyle, Nate Capone, Back row - Nate Capone, Zach Daniels, Danielle Lussi, Spencer Knickerbocker, Annie Frenette. (Missing - Tara Garraghty-Moats)

Twelve year old Miles Lussi carried the hopes of Eastern ski jumping fans for the up-coming Junior Olympics by virtue of his putting down the longest jump, 69.5 meters, in Saturday's competition in Salisbury. However an unfortunate fall in the final round of Sunday's competition left Miles limping badly with an injured ankle. We wish Miles a speedy recovery. And we wish the best of luck to the entire Eastern sqad in the 2010 Junior Olympics in Colorado.

Fly far, ski fast, make friends and have fun!
