Chivers Cup Ski Jumping Competition

Vermont Academy hosted the 2010 Chivers Cup competition in Saxtons River, Vermont on a warm sunny Saturday. The event title honored Warren Chivers, the long-time ski coach at Vermont Academy. The portrait at the left is a detail from a montage oil painting which hangs over the fireplace in the Chivers Building, the VA ski chalet overlooking the new ski jumps. All that was saved of the old jumps in 2002 is the 35 meter tower which Chivers and his son Ted built with their own hands.
Skiers had their choice of three jumping hills, k15, k20 and k35, all built in 2002, and took a trial jump followed by two competitive rounds.
The competition was directed by Lebanon Outing Club sparkplug Jon Farnham who was elevated this year from his previous part time position to become Vermont Academy Cross Country and Jumping Coach.
Jon was assisted by Jody Graves, Secretary, and Technical Delegate Jim Carter. Style judges were Jim Carter, Wil Smith and Jody Graves. There were over 30 competitors and a crowd of about 75 spectators and volunteers.
The nordic combined cross country was hosted by the VA XC team on a 1 km loop that was visible to the spectators from trailside and also from the deck of the Chivers Building.
Competitors jumping the k15 and k20 hills skied one lap, the k35 Junior-3 and Masters skiers raced 3 km, and Junior-2 competitors skied 5 km in soft snow. The groomed race course looped around the athletic field and included two hills. (from Jody Graves)

Our podium pictures are incomplete. It appears that some athletes and their teams or families did not stay through all of the later events to attend the awards ceremonies. The awards were ceramic mugs suitable for hot chocolate or hot cider.

The Gundersen handicap system was followed so the seven class winners in jumping started the race together, with lower scoring jumpers starting later according to their jumping points (two seconds per point).
