The first
Soaring Saturday
of 2009

Lake Placid, NY
July 4, 2009

The Soaring Saturday series was started a few years ago as a way for ski jumpers training in Lake Placid during the summer months to have some friendly competition and to put on a show for any visitors who happened to be touring the jumping complex on a Saturday. Sometimes there were modest cash prizes for the winners. The first Soaring Saturday competition of the 2009 summer season was held on July 4 with all of the skiers from the previous day's Annual Independence Day competition.

The three jump, dial-a-start competition is (almost) distance-only. There are no style judges, but deductions are made for falls or for no telemark landing.

  • Athletes pick any start that they want, so Anders is jumping with about 85 kphand Spencer with 90 kph.
  • Athletes take 3 jumps and drop the poorer of the first two, but must use the third jump.
  • All jumpers must have a telemark landing or they get docked 2 meters. so Tara jumped 104 meters but had no telemark landing...score was 102 for that jump.
  • If a skier loses balance and drags his hands after landing, he loses 5 meters, like Connor Jacobson did.
  • If a jumper completely falls then he gets no score at all, like Alex Madden did.
  • It appears that only the top ten after the first two rounds were permitted to ski in the third "championship" round.
Tara Garaghty-Moats beat the boys again, and posted the longest ride of the day.
