Lake Placid, NY

The first Independence Day Ski Tournament in Lake Placid was held in 1948, with jumpers skiing the 40 meter jump on a surface of crushed ice. [ See More ] Now 61 years later, 17 skilled jumpers skied the Olympic 90 meter jump on a plastic surface. Skiers stayed dry through two rounds of jumping but were soaked by a quick rain shower in the final round. National Champion Anders Johnson of Park City, Utah kept his Lake Placid win-streak alive, winning the overall competition. In the Junior Class, Tara Garaghty-Moats, the only girl to register, skied with the boys and ran away with the gold medal.
