Weather predictions seemed to change daily during the week leading up to the Sunday Lions Club meet. Early forcasts called for sunshine and 45 degrees -- a spring slush-cup. Then the forcast changed to cold, freezing the slush into a glacier. Finally, with one day to go, the truth came out -- cold temperatures and snow! During the week, the ORDA crew used the snowcat to bulldoze literally tons of snow from the landing of the freestyle jumps onto the 18 and 48 meter hills, where it was given final grooming by NYSEF coaches and skiers.
On Saturday, the Intervale jump complex was the site of kids' cross country ski races -- it was the Mid Atlantic Bill Koch League Festival --so the jumps weren't opened for practice until mid-afternoon, when jumpers found the landings and outruns soft and wet. It all froze up on Saturday night and snow began falling -- not much, just enough to be a bother as the new snow was much slower than the old snow underneath. However, the inrun tracks were deep, straight and icy, which made for very exciting long jumps. Action started on the 18 meter jump, then moved immediately to the 48. Sunday was Matt Cook's last official day as a NYSEF coach. Goodbye Matt, thanks for all you did, and best of luck in your new endeavors. But stop by when you get a chance.

Lions Club Nordic Combined Events

When the jumping was finished, the area again swarmed with cross country skiers. The plan had been to race on Sunday at Van Hoevenberg, but the snow at that cross country venue was too thin to provide tracks, so Sunday's races were again held at the jumps. We think that the Nordic Combined skiers in the Lions Club Competition raced along with the special runners and the results were sorted out afterward.
