Ski jumping and Newport, NH have gone together for decades. The name McCrillis and skiing/ski jumping have also gone together for decades around Newport/Sunapee area. John W. McCrillis was one of the pioneers of alpine skiing in the area and is an honored member of the National Ski Hall of Fame in Ishpeming, Michigan. His son John Cooper McCrillis helped get the old trestle used during the 1932 Lake Placid Winter Olympics moved to Newport in 1975. John C. McCrillis had two sons, David and Bill who took up ski jumping. Several years back Bill won the McCrillis Cup competition and when his work schedule allows him, he makes the trip back to the area in order to participate in the competition. Now the next generation of flying McCrillis's has put on the skis. This year would mark the first time David's 10 year old son Cooper would compete on the trestle his grandfather helped to move to the area.

After several days of warm weather (for the second time in two years the thaw hit right before Valentine's Day) the weather once again turned cold. The hill workers spent part of Thursday, Friday and Saturday getting the K32 ski jump back in shape in Newport, NH just in time for towns 93rd annual winter carnival. For years there has been a ski jump meet as part of the winter carnival to help showcase another one of the fine winter activities people can get involved with in the area.
This year brought sunny skies the whole weekend with temperatures right near the freezing point. The track condition was fast thanks to the February thaw and refreezing. It was fun trying to cut a new track on the inrun Saturday. Due to the thaw only the K32 would see any jumping action as the other hills weren't able to be salvaged. The jump site is known for funneling of the wind right up the ski jump and today was no different. At times, there was a noticeable head wind that helped those who knew how to use it to their benefit.
The meet was scored best two out of three rounds and one point per meter. The five classes were handled a little differently, with an Under Grade 6, Middle School, High School, Women and an Out of School/Over The Hill class(Ok so not everyone in the class has hit the big 40 yet). From Ryan Crawford

Until 2006, Tad Langlois, a three time Olympian from the Sunapee/Newport area, held the hill record. The hill record had originally been measured in feet and when converted to meters came out to 34.3 meters. In 2006 Danny Jones from Andover, NH managed to break the hill record by going 34.5 meters. The landing hill has changed since Tad had set the record. In the past Danny's older brother Chris has won the McCrillis Cup twice. Chris was back this year while Danny was out competing in freestyle skiing. The first round of competition saw older brother Chris tie Danny's record. Everyone including Chris knew he could break the record given the awesome conditions. Chris said he didn't want to break the record. He wanted the record to be held by the Jones brothers. With a second round jump of 33 meters, it sure looked like he was keeping his word. In the third round he decided his brother had held the record long enough and he broke his brother’s record by jumping 35 meters. I was personally standing at 35 meters when he landed. I can attest to the fact that it was definitely a new hill record (Ryan Crawford).

Each year the overall winner of the K-32 competition takes home a nice bowl and his name is engraved on the McCrillis Cup. The list of past winners of the McCrillis Cup includes names like Bernie Dion, Sean Burke, Jon Farnham Jr, Matt McKenney, Bill McCrillis, Matt O'Claire and Chris Jones. Up to this year only three people had won the McCrillis Cup competition twice: Bernie Dion, Matt O'Claire and Chris Jones. This year, with his record tying and record breaking jumps, Chris Jones became the first three time winner of the McCrillis Cup.

Bob Rollins was a long time ski jumping judge who lived in the Newport area. He always was trying to help kids get into the sport of ski jumping. When he died in 2006 it was decided to give out a new award at the McCrillis Cup competition. It would be awarded to youngest competitor on the K32 at the McCrillis Cup. This year looked like Cooper McCrillis would be strong in the running at 10 years old with one potential candidate that could be younger. Turns out A.J. King was two months younger than Cooper but Jared Frost had both A.J. and Cooper beat. Jared is only 8 years old. He ended up winning his age group as well. Congrats Jared.
