Sig Evensen (1924-1999) and Art Tokle (1922-2005)

The one day meet offered jumping on three hills, plus two separate cross country races for Nordic combined competition. The day started on the K-18 jump and went on to the K-48. Next came a cross country race for the small hill skiers, run on a course at the jumping complex, followed by awards in the base lodge. (These were not well publicized, and so not well attended.) The K-90 jump attracted only five competitors so it was simplified to a distance-only competition (but requiring telemark landings). The long day ended with another cross country race, this one at Mt van Hoevenberg, for the 48 meter competitors. The result below are listed in the order the events were run.

Small Hill Nordic Combined Competition

While the older skiers were competing on the 48 meter hill, the youngest Nordic Combined competitors, those jumping only in the 18 meter event, prepared for their 2 km cross country race, one loop of the course at the jumping complex.
The start times were handicapped at the rate of one minute for every 31 points of jumping score (1.935 seconds per point).

K-90 SKI JUMP

January 2009 found the best Eastern ski jumpers scattered far and wide, with one living in Park City, three training in Steamboat Springs, and five traveling and competing in Europe with the Project-X team. That left only a handful of big-hill skiers available to contest a 90 meter event, so organizers held a distance only event involving five jumpers. Each skier took three jumps and we understand that of the three, the last jump would count, as would the better of the first two jumps, but to score, a jump had to be finished with a telemark landing. The jumpers reported that they were banged around in the air by uneven winds, but they still put on a good show.

Norwegian Open Nordic Combined Competition

After the 90 meter jumping, an enthusiastic group of Nordic Combined skiers traveled to Mt. Van Hoevenberg to finish off their long day of competition with cross country races.
Competitors in Junior-3 Class raced one lap around the 2.5 km Biathlon loop and their start times were handicapped at the rate of one minute for every 31 points of jumping score (1.935 seconds per point).
All the other competitors raced two laps for a 5 km race, with a time handicap (at the start) of one minute for every 15 points of jumping score (4 seconds per point).
New snow and cold temperatures made the course soft and very slow.
