Vermont Academy Ski Jumps

In 2002 Vermont Academy in Saxtons River VT undertook a complete rebuild and update of the old ski jumping facility behind the gym on the V.A. campus. Alexei Sotskov was hired to run a Nordic ski program, both jumping and cross country. Alexei hosted an inaugural jumping competition in January 2003 and another the following winter, but V.A. held no jumps after that through 2008 when Sotskov moved on to new position at Kimball Union Academy. Before the 2008-09 season, Vermont Academy enlisted Jon Farnham in a part-time position to direct their ski jumping program. Jon immediately reserved a date on the Eastern competition schedule, and on January 25, after a four year hiatus, the V.A. jumps all saw action with competitors young and old coming from New York and New England to join two beginners from Vermont Academy and enjoy the Vermont snow. It was a busy weekend for Jon Farnham who organized the Lebanon Outing Club meet on Saturday and also Vermont Academy meet on Sunday. Jon found the time and enerby to compete both days, winning two gold medals. "Jon has a big battery!"

Vermont Academy Nordic Combined Competition
Saxtons River, VT, Sunday, January 25, 2009
The Gundersen handicap system was followed so the four class winners in jumping started the race together, with lower scoring jumpers starting later according to their jumping points (six seconds per point).
The racers completed two laps around a well groomed and well marked one kilometer loop with a good rise of elevation on the north side, and spectators could watch the competitors throughout the race. (from Jody Graves)
