On the Independence Day weekend of 2008, Lake Placid, with an annual Fourth of July jump running for over 50 years, found itself in conflict
with Steamboat Springs, CO on their new 70 meter hill.
With just 13 skiers in the field, Lake Placid organizers broke with tradition and held
a distance-only competition (no style judges) in which the competitors were free to choose any start point at the top of the tower. This evened the playing field, giving less talented jumpers
the speed that they needed to jump to the bottom of the hill. The contest was decided by the total distance of each skier's best two of three jumps.
Thirteen year old A.J. Brown of the Norge Ski Club outside of Chicago took full advantage, coming
from a very high start and walking away with the victory. Brown was one of four Norge skier who
made the trip to compete with nine Eastern skiers from Vermont, New Hampshire and New York.
Nine of the 13 skiers flew past the 90 meter critical point of the hill.
