Annual Lion's Club Ski Jumping

Two traditions merged this year as Matt Cook expanded the annual Lions Club meet to absorb the Lead Dog three-event fun-meet. The Lions Club has been supporting ski jumping in Lake Placid for more than fifty years. The Lead Dog ski-meister event was started some years ago by Chris Hastings when he was the NYSEF jumping coach.

Matt Cook's invitation promised Ski Jumping on three hills (K6, 18 & K48), followed by Mass Start XC Sprints with Obstacle Course. XC results would be the basis for selecting two-person teams for XC relays (fastest paired with slowest, etc.). Between noontime snacks, competitors would be scored as they shot at targets with Biathlon air rifles (no skiing involved). An alpine race, described variously as "slalom" and as "downhill" started by the top of the chairlift and ran behind the K-48 and the freestyle, along the parking lot and down the hill under the line of flags, ending on the K-18 outrun -- a real glider's course. Awards, Potluck and prize table ended the busy day.

In the end, only three events (jump, XC and downhill) were scored in the final totals, but many special awards were promised (each to a different athlete):

  • Best In-run, Best Take-Off, Best Flight, Best Telemark Landing for the
  • K10, K18, and K48!
  • Fastest Male and Female in Obstacle Course!
  • Fastest 3 Teams in Relay Event!
  • Most Biathlon Targets knocked down!
  • Fastest Male and Female Alpine Competitors!
  • Poetry in Motion! Best Ski Jump, XC, and Alpine Crashes!
  • Kings and Queens of the Hill Award: Any athlete who participates in every competition!
Both Matt Cook and Jody Graves report that the weather was horrible, with all kinds of cold precipitation falling from the sky, but both agreed that it didn't dampen the spirits, "nobody cared or seemed to notice" and both assure us that a good time was had by all. A big "Thank you!" goes to Matt and to the NYSEF parents who made the day a success.
