The 82nd annual
Salisbury Ski Jumps
including

  • Friday night target jumping, under the lights
  • Saturday afternoon Salisbury Invitation Jump
  • Sunday Eastern USSA Ski Jumping Championships

hosted by the
Salisbury Winter Sports Association
at John Satre Hill - Salisbury, Connecticut
February 8-10, 2008

The weather gods dealt a very difficult hand to the Salisbury Winter Sports Association but the stalwart SWSA volunteers rose to the challenge. They waited out rain and warm weather and snowed the 64 meter hill in less than two days, providing Eastern skiers with remarkably good skiing conditions for the Friday night target event. Sadly, SWSA gave up on its Saturday morning junior event in order to focus all its efforts on the big hill. The field of competitors wasn't large, with 13 entering the Target Jump and just over 20, in the Saturday Salisbury Invitational. The quality was impressive with lots of long and graceful jumps, even with the new snow which fell all day Saturday, slowing the speed of the track. And like last year, there were several new faces on the old Salisbury hill, as Parker Haynes of Kennett High School returned, bringing several more New Hampshire high school jumpers with him from Kennett, Hopkinton and Hanover.

Friday Evening Target Jump

The Target Jump was decided in three rounds with 0fficials setting a target distance first at 60 meters, then at 65 and finally at 68.5. The field of competitors was cut down for each round, and skiers were free to choose any of the start points at the top of the tower. The winner was the jumper who came closest to the target distance, without exceeding it. (Anyone jumping past the target distance was disqualified.)
Churchill Brothers Builders of Sharon CT put up a purse of $500 for the winner. Andrew Bliss of Lake Placid gave his competitors no margin for error, landing exactly at the target distance in all three rounds. In a very generous move, Andrew announced Sunday evening that he would split his winnings between SWSA and Eastern Ski Jumping.

New Award Established
Mark Levasseur does it again!

A few years ago, Mark Levasseur established a new award in honor of Sig Evensen, long time friend of ski jumping. The award goes annually to the winner of the Junior Class crown at the Eastern Championships.

This year Mark was at it again as he established another award to be given each year to the winner of the Masters Class at the Eastern Championships. This award is named the Earle Murphy and Don West award in honor of two long-time Eastern Master Jumpers who have had significant impacts on the sport.
The honor was a surprise to both Earle and Don.

Lots of years of jumping in these two
Don West and Earle Murphy

2008 Eastern USSA Ski Jumping Championships
[Final JO Qualifier]
Sunday, February 10

An intense Sunday morning snow squall dropped a few inches of moist fluff on the north-west corner of Connecticut. Officials and the SWSA crew cleared the new snow off the track and packed it onto the landing while the competitors ski-packed the outrun. To give the landing a little extra smoothing and speed, organizers used a new way to introduce the competitors -- the jumpers skied down the landing one by one as the announcer called the names.
