Organizers presented two special awards in memory of the two honored Norwegians. The Art Tokle Award is awarded to the overall winner of the 90 meter jumping, and the Sig Evensen Award goes to the overall winner on the K-48. Andrew Bliss dominated both competitions and took home the two memorial plaques. At right, Bliss, with Art Tokle Jr., shows off the plaques. The Big Winner

Lake Placid has no permanent beginner's jump so Sean Burke filled the gap by carving a ten meter (6 meter?) jump out of the deep snow in at the bottom of the free-style landing hill.

Several young jumpers skied that little hill in a "demonstration event". Coach and hill-builder Sean Burke poses at right with five of the little jumpers.

Norwegian Open Nordic Combined Competition
Lake Placid NY, Sunday, February 3, 2008

After the jumping, an enthusiastic group of Nordic Combined skiers traveled to Mt. Van Hoevenberg to finish off their long day of competition with cross country races.
Senior Class competitors raced a 7.5 km sprint event using scores from their first jump on the 90 m hill. Scores are recalculated for Nordic combined with a different distance formula and so are not identical to the special jump scores listed above. These skiers took three trips around a 2.5 km loop.
Skiers in Junior Class and the Ladies Class raced 5 km (2 laps) and used jumping scores from the 48 meter competition, again recalculated.
The rest of the skiers raced a single 2.5 km lap, except for one very young skier who was guided by an adult on a short-cut around a 1.5 km loop.
With these skiers in so many age groups and on different hills (often just one competitor per class) organizer Matt Cook has simply reported the cross-country times.

SENIOR CLASS
One 90 m jump, 7.5 km XC.

All the Rest
Various jumps, 2.5 km XC.

Note - The three young 48 meter jumpers, Miles, Luke and Annie, started their race at time 0:00 while all the 2.5 km racers who jumped the smaller hills started at 0:30. Several days after the event, scorekeepers discovered that they had apparently not made the proper adjustments to the times, so the times for these three racers are now each increased by thirty seconds. The change moves Langton Douglas into third place. We hope that the times are now all correct. These are still simply XC times, not NC results.
