Good snow in December was ravaged by an early January thaw but when the cold returned, Jon Farnham and his hard-working crew prepared the three jumping hills just in time for the frosting on the cake -- a few inches of natural snow which gave perfect jumping conditions. Eastern jumpers responded, bringing out the usual suspects plus several surprises. Chris Jones and Josh Flanders took time from college to join the fun, and Jeff Colt and Parker Haynes who stepped up their jumping last year skied very well. Also trying their wings on the 50 meter hill were New Hampshire High School skiers Gavin Guay of Concord HS, and Joe Merrow and Duncan Sweny from Hopkinton. The chatter in the wax room was about a new hill record -- conditions were right but while we saw many jumps right to the bottom of the 50 meter hill, nobody managed to pass the 52.5 meter record set several years ago by Kyle Wylie and later tied by Jonathan Kling. Cross-country races followed the 50 m jumping, first a mass-start race for the small-hill nordic combined competitions, then a 3k Gunder sprint involving thirteen of the big hill competitors. As dusk fell, action moved to the smaller hills under the lights, where a dad joined his son, and a mom joined the fun! The Upper Valley jumping weekend would continue on Sunday at Oak Hill in Hanover. The Lebanon 50 meter jump competition was the first half of a Nordic Combined team qualifier for the Junior Olympics to be held next month in Ishpeming, Michigan. The cross country race for the qualifier was scheduled for Sunday at Oak Hill.

First the small-hill jumpers competed in a mass-start race, going two laps around the course for a one-km distance. We have not yet received final results for these NC events. The NC competition for the big hill was a sprint, using the scores from the first competitive jump taken a couple earlier in the afternoon and a 3 km XC race -- six laps around a fast half-km course.
