The 81st annual
Salisbury Ski Jumps
including

  • Friday night target jumping, under the lights
  • Saturday afternoon Salisbury Invitation Jump
  • Sunday Eastern USSA Ski Jumping Championships

hosted by the
Salisbury Winter Sports Association
at John Satre Hill - Salisbury, Connecticut
February 9-11, 2007

Once upon a time, the Salisbury Ski Jump weekend consisted of a single Sunday competition, usually the Eastern U.S. Ski Jumping Championships. Then, a few decades ago, the Salisbury Winter Sports Association (SWSA) added a Saturday competition, the Salisbury Invitational. For the last few years, SWSA also ran a morning competition for the kids on the small hills next to 64 meter Satre Hill. For the 2007 event, organizers added still another event, a target jump held on Friday evening under the lights, followed by a fireworks display. A second target jump followed the Eastern Championship event on Sunday afternoon.

The weather gods played havoc with winter sports over the entire eastern half of the U.S. (and Europe as well!) forcing postponement or cancellation of many scheduled events. Cold weather finally arrived in mid-January, but no snow came with the package, so organizers all over snow country set to work with snow guns, substituting for what nature forgot to provide.

SWSA volunteers had about two weeks to put snow on the ski jump and then prepare the surface, and they did a good job on the 64 meter Satre Hill. Unfortunately, they found it impossible to prepare the small hills and so they sadly cancelled the junior competition. The three big hill events went off well with very nice snow on the landing and a machine-cut track down the tower sprayed with water to provide a firm, fast ice surface.

The field of competitors wasn't large, just over 20, but the quality was impressive with lots of long and graceful jumps. And there were several new faces on the old Salisbury hill. Mark Breen returned to jumping after almost 20 years to win the masters class, while adult beginner Ryan Crawford did well in his first jumps on a larger hill. Sixty nine year old Don West returned after a two year absence and, at the other end of the age spectrum, ten year old Luke Daniels improved every day, clearing 50 meters by Sunday! Another first-year Satre Hill jumper, Jonathan Kimball, skied himself onto the JO team, while New Hampshire high school jumper Parker Haynes of Kennett High School in Conway NH looked good and seemed to be having the time of his life!

In each of the four competitive classes, Saturday's winner also became Eastern Champion on Sunday. Nina Lussi of Lake Placid dominated the Women's jumping and won the Louise Sherwood memorial cup (for the best single jump in Saturday's women's class), while Peter Frenette won the Junior-2 crown, both target jumps, and the Ladies Cup (to Sunday's highest point-getter not in the class of the champion "in memory of Charlotte Satre Torrissen in honor of the women who graciously support SWSA."). But the big winner was Lake Placid's Andrew "Fuzzy" Bliss who hauled home the Eastern crown, and the Evensen Award (to the Top Junior), while stamping his name on both the Sherwood Cup (to Saturday's winner) and the SWSA Cup (Eastern Champion).

In recent years, Salisbury has been the final qualifier event for the Eastern Division Team to compete at the annual Junior Olympics, and on Sunday afternoon, after the award ceremonies for the Eastern Championships, Eastern jumping coach Matt Cook announced the ten-member 2007 Eastern JO team.

Friday Evening Target Jump

Officials set a target distance and skiers were free to choose any of the start points at the top of the tower. The winner was the jumper who came closest to the target distance, without exceeding it. (Anyone jumping past the target distance was disqualified.)

Fourteen year old Peter Frenette (right) of Lake Placid emerged as the winner the target jump, which carried a nice monetary award. (Peter stayed perfect by copping a second target event on Sunday afternoon.)
