The Lake Placid Lions Club has been supporting jumping at the Olympic jumping complex for over fifty years. This year's event was enriched by the addition of the 2006 Nordic Kids Festival (Bill Koch Festival with a new name) which was scheduled for Feb. 11 in Salisbury CT but postponed due to lack of snow. A three day thaw with temperatures around 50 left Dan Warner's ORDA hill crew scrambling but, as usual, they came through and provided 18 and 48 meter jumping and cross country. Chief of Competition Matt Cook and his wonderful team of NYSEF volunteers started with 18 meter jumping, then moved to the 48 meter jump and finished with the Nordic Combined cross country races. The day was blessed with blue skies and sunshine, light breezes and temperatures in the forties. Chemicals made the landings solid and safe but the tracks were wet and the cross country course was soft and heavy. When the skiing was finished, everybody retired to the second floor of the base lodge for food prepared and set out by NYSEF volunteers, awards presented by Doug Hoffman of the Lions club, and visits to a nice prize table. Perhaps a first in the long history of ski jumping was the participation of a skier from El Salvador. Claudia Hernandez is an exchange student spending the year with the Frenette family in Lake Placid, and with both Peter and Annie Frenette involved in ski jumping and Nordic combined, Claudia did the natural thing and joined in.

NORDIC COMBINED

Cross country races for the Nordic Combined competition were held at the jumping complex. The course started on the 18 m. outrun and ran behind the Freestyle building and up along the driveway and parking lot. Turning left into the woods, the course climbed to the icehouse by the 48 m. tower, then returned to the bottom, ran behind the VIP stand, toured the big-hill outrun and returned to the start. Some classes took one lap, some took two.
