Eastern USSA Ski Jumping Championships Salisbury Winter Sports Association [Final JO Qualifier] John Satre Hill - Salisbury, Connecticut Sunday, February 9, 2003
In both 1998 and 1999, Taylor Hoffman was the overall Eastern Champion, putting his name
twice on the big silver bowl called the Satre Trophy. Taylor made it look easy and he
seemed a shoo-in to win a third time and take the huge cup home. But it was not as easy as
it looked. In the year 2000, Taylor's good friend and training companion, Ryan Cutter, shaded Hoffman
by a point and a half to deny him permanent ownership of the coveted bowl. In 2001, Chris Decker
turned in a huge performance, outscoring Taylor by more than twenty points. Then in 2002, Taylor was
named a forejumper for the Salt Lake City Olympic games and missed the Eastern Championships.
So in 2003, Taylor was back with a new resolve -- he wanted the Satre Trophy. But still, it wasn't easy.
Several good Eastern jumpers would do their best to finish ahead of Taylor and it promised to be a
very exciting competition. On Saturday, Taylor tore his ski boot on landing, but some locals helped him
with an impromptu repair. It just refused to be easy! Conditions were perfect for the Sunday showdown.
Geoff Howe and Jonathan Kling did their best to make it difficult but, in the end, Taylor shaded their scores by
about five points and joined Jay Rand, Jr., also of Lake Placid, as the only jumpers to retire the
beautiful Satre Trophy. Congratulations Taylor!
