The 2002 New Years Special Jumping and Nordic Combined competitions served as tryout meets for the team to travel to the World Junior Nordic Championships in Sweden in February 2003. The Nordic Combined competition was a sprint involving the points from the first-round competitive jump on the 120 meter hill and then a 7.5 km cross country race. In the jumping results below, nordic Combined competitors are indicated by an asterisk*.
One feature of the weekend of jumping was the best group of American women competitors ever assembled including a healthy and strong Lindsey Van and the grande dame of U.S. jumping, internationally known Karla Keck. The current top lady, Jessica Jerome, wants to go to the Championships in Sweden and so registered in the Junior Class rather than Ladies Class.
