From the 1949 American Ski Annual

|
Merrill "Mezzy" Barber of Brattleboro was a super ski jumper, but he made the mistake of putting his name on a ski wax, making him a professional and so ineligible for the U.S. Olympic Team. Jay Rand of Lake Placid is the father of Olympian Jay Rand Jr. who ran the ski jumps for many years after the 1980 Games and who is now the venue manager at Whiteface Ski Area. Both Jay Rands were extraordinary ski jumpers.
We believe that the July 4th jumps on crushed ice ran from 1948 to 1977, a span of 30 events.
The competition moved to the P-70 meter hill about 1982, so it won't be very many years before the July 4th jumping on plastic has run longer than the old meets on crushed ice. |
