SALISBURY'S SKI JUMPING
February 12-13, 2005

A day of rain on Thursday turned Satre Hill into a disaster, but at the last minute, the weather turned dry and cool and a resolute ski jump hill crew spread a stockpile of snow on the jumps. By Saturday morning, the Salisbury Winter Sports Association (SWSA) was ready to welcome ski jumpers from all over the north-east to their annual weekend of ski jumping, culminating on Sunday afternoon with the Eastern U.S. Championships.

Ski jumpers came from the Upper Connecticut Valley and from Lake Placid, from Worcester MA, from Syracuse and from Long Island to jump and compete on three hills. Saturday morning saw the younger skiers enjoying the 20 and 30 meter hills. In the afternoon, action turned to the 64 meter jump where Junior Class 2 competitors were vying for spots on the Eastern Junior Olympic Team to travel to Steamboat Springs CO later in February.

Conditions were very good, the weather was cool but the competition was hot, as Jonathan Kling of Gunstock (Laconia NH), a student at Worcester Poly-Tech, Janne Rand, a UVM pre-med student, and Andrew Bliss of Lake Placid emerged the big winners.

When the jumping was all over, everybody gathered in a nearby church basement for snacks, awards, and the presentation of the 2005 Eastern Junior Olympic team.

From the Eastern ski jumping community, a big THANK YOU, and congratulations to all the loyal and hard working SWSA volunteers for performing this miracle and pulling off a wonderful weekend of ski jumping!

The Sherwood Brothers Trophy
The new Sherwood Brothers Trophy, for winner of the Salisbury Invitational.

The Salisbury Winter Sports Association enjoyed a grand period before WW-II when Norwegian immigrants Birger Torrison, Ole Hegge and the Satre brothers (after whom Satre hill is named) made their mark at all levels, right up to the Olympics. SWSA enjoyed a second grand epoc after the war when these skiers passed on their skills and knowledge to several Sherwood brothers who were born and raised in Salisbury. At the Saturday banquet, the most successful of the Sherwoods, Olympian Roy, spoke for his brothers, presenting a big silver bowl to SWSA. This new award, the Sherwood Brothers Trophy, will be engraved with the overall winner of each Salisbury Invitational competition, the annual Saturday jump. Winners will take home a smaller engraved plate, but the big silver bowl will remain in Salisbury.

In an embarassing moment, organizers awarded the Satre trophy to Andrew Bliss but then realized that by rule, it should go to Jonathan Kling. (Bliss, skiing in J-2 class, was given more takeoff speed. In the photo at right, Bliss juggles all the hardware.) Andrew was gracious about the mistake and smiled as he handed Kling the replica cup (below, left). In the end, Andrew still did well, taking home the Ladies Cup and the Sig Evensen Award (below, right) for the Junior Class winner.
