The five very young Canadian skiers all hailed from the Calgary program, while IMD athletes all train in Park City and the RMD participants are from Steamboat Spring. Seven of the eight Central skiers are from the Norge program in Illinois while Dave Edlund lives in St. Paul. Easterners Matt Delaney and David McCahill are spending the year living and training in Steamboat but represented the East. The Eastern team had four residents of the Lake Placid area and seven more who have moved there to train in the NYSEF program. Only Jonathan Kling and Nick Fairall live elsewhere in the East. It is clear that the sport has adopted the approach, used for decades in tennis and gymnastics, of moving to a training center in order to improve as an athlete.

The weather was very cold for the entire Championships, sometime -15 to -20 in the morning and never rising up to zero. Thursday and Friday were blessed with brilliant sunshine, but Saturday brought thickening clouds and, late in the day, light snow, though temperatures were still below zero.

For the Gold Cup Olympic trials in 2002, ORDA created a cross country course at the jumping complex, and this course was used for all the NC-XC races this week. It is a challenging one kilometer loop with its low point on the outruns and its high point next to the K-48 tower.

On Thursday, Jan. 20, official training was held on both hills (K-90 and K-120) with two jumps on each hill. Organizers had hoped to provide three rounds of training on the big hill but a troublesome little wind came up during the second round and the third round was cancelled. One of the skiers who had trouble with the air was Anders Johnson who grumbled that his second training ride of 108 meters spoiled his record on this 120 meter hill of never jumping less than 120 meters!

Friday was the day for team competition in both Jumping and Nordic Combined. The special jumping was contested by ten teams, Canada and RMD each had one, East and IMD each had three and Central had two. Each team had four skiers, and all four were counted. The Eastern first-team came out on top ahead of Intermountain-One and Canada.

The Nordic Combined competition was for two man teams in a relay format. Jumping points were taken from the first jump of the 120 meter competition. Then, starting with Gunderson handicaps, the skiers of each team alternated skiing one lap at a time, then tagging off to his team-mate. The full race covered ten laps for ten kilometers, so each skier skied five one km. laps with rests of about two minutes between laps. Top three teams were IMD-1, RMD-2, RMD-1.

Saturday, under gray skies, jumpers competed as individuals on the 90 meter hill. The top Canadian jumper had the misfortune of leaving on the red light. Not late, but early! It seemed to be a matter of miscommunication with his coach who was signaling with his hand that the air was good, but the jumper took it as a go signal, as he was watching he coach instead of the red light. Sad! The top three finishers were Willy Graves, Bryan Fletcher and Evan Bliss.

Then activity moved to the cross country course where Willy Graves followed his number one ranking in the jumping portion of Nordic Combined with the fastest cross country time. Bryan Fletcher and Skyler Keate completed the podium.

At six pm, everybody gathered in the base lodge for a banquet of salad and lasagna, cookies and brownies. The usual speaches and thank-yous were followed by awards for all four events, all conducted by master of ceremonies Larry Stone. Willy Graves was the star of the evening with two individual gold medals and another gold for team jumping. The evening finished with local jumper Stan Etzol presenting a long computer-show of pictures he had taken during the events.

Dear reader,
The events are over and all the participants have returned home. As of this morning (Tuesday) the hit counter on this page, which was also the live update page, reads 623 VISITS. That's great, but I am very curious who has been following. Originally, I had an e-mail feedback link on this page, but I found that I couldn't read my e-mail in Lake Placid so I took the link off. However, now I am back home where I can read my mail, so here is a feedback link. If you are still reading you must be hard-core (or don't have enough to do) but I would appreciate any feedback you would like offer. I'm really not just fishing for praise; I want to know how it worked for you. What was good, what was unsatisfactory, what was missing. What was that special thing that you hoped to see, but it just never came up? I know that I had some quiet times, first due to my inability to access information while I was working up in Mouse's office. Then Saturday morning for a couple of hours, I couldn't get on to the Eastern ISP to post updates. So let me hear from you. I'd like to know who you are and what you think. Put something like "Live Updates" in the subject line.
Thanks, Don West
