COACH
LARRY STONE
STONEY'S CORNER
by Larry Stone, NYSEF/Eastern Jumping Coach

The winter of ’04 is now behind us and I think it was a difficult winter which perhaps taught us some lessons. Our results as a division were not outstanding on a national level. When we went to JO’s, North Americans and Nationals it seemed that we were a bit behind the general level. We had the first full year of training with Matt Cook which was a good thing. I believe Matt brought a new seriousness of purpose and consistency to our program which is encouraging, but as Matt said to me at one point becoming a competitive Nordic Combined skier takes time, especially physiologically. We are obviously on the right course with that and we congratulate Willy Graves on his achievement of making the World Junior Team.

One area I did notice a difference in this year was that our eastern skiers didn’t seem to have the confidence that they were competitive with the top skiers from the other divisions. It is important to keep a long range overview and sit down with your coach to talk about your goals and expectations. Everyone goes through up and down periods, but you have to keep a positive attitude through the tough times. This means on and off the hill. Pay attention to the little details like consistent physical training and stretching. Stay the course in all aspects of your discipline and have respect for yourself, skiers, and coaches and we will start to post some serious results again.

See you on the hill!

AUSTRIA!

Ransau K-90
The 90 meter jump in Ramsau, AUT
Ramsau, Austria: Connections have been rekindled with Andreas Mitter, an Austrian ski jumper who spent the summer of 2000 in Lake Placid training and coaching with Larry Stone. Many of our Eastern team members remember him for his role in the Grasshopper Camps. Remember the crazy van rides

A summer training trip to Austria is in the works! Thanks to Andreas’s offer to help with lodging and hill coordination, Matt Cook will be journeying with a group of Ski Jumpers and Nordic combined skiers to Ramsau, Austria this summer. Training and competitions will take place on K70, K90 and K120 hills. The Nordic Combined group is also hoping to get in some cross-country skiing on the Dachstein Glacier. Ability, age, seriousness of purpose, regular participation, attitude, experience with the Eastern program, and a commitment to jumping and skiing are some of the attributes needed to be a part of this journey. Please speak with Matt Cook to express an interest in this or other training trips.
