The OFFICIAL LINE
Bob Rollins Retires from Judging
Eastern ski jumping judge Bob Rollins has announced his retirement from judging
after thirty years of service. The quiet, friendly Newport, NH native has judged more
meets over the last few seasons than anyone else, working Eastern meets on weekends and
high school competitions during the week. Always a numbers guy, Bob estimates that he
has judged 50,000 jumps in 500 competitions. Best jumpers judged: U.S. Ski Team jumpers,
and ex-world champion Roger Ruud whom he judged at the 1996 IMC in Steamboat, which he
calls his best-ever competition. Rollins also served as distance measurer at two Olympic
games and DMR at the World Junior Championships, and for several years has been treasurer
of the Eastern Nordic Ski Officials Assn.
Bob jumped small hills in the 1940s and stayed involved in hill preparation. Before
the 1980 Olympics, he and a couple of friends arranged to bring the old steel 30 meter
tower from Lake Placid to Newport and have been responsible for maintaining the Newport
jumps ever since. Why did he start judging? "I liked going to meets and wanted to be
part of it." And we are glad that he did, and hope to see our friend Bob at ski jumps
in the future.

Bring it On!
The Eastern,
Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined program brought coach Matt Cook and over 25
athletes to train and compete in Minnesota, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Colorado,
Utah, Alaska and Norway this season. Evan Bliss won the Overall Title for the Eastern
Circuit and Willy Graves broke into the top ten at US Nationals. Let’s do it again guys.
Matt has also spent time recruiting athletes around the Lake Placid area in the interest
of further strengthening our programs. Of particle interest is the developing growth of our
NYSEF Women’s ski jumping program. The Lake Placid Lussi sisters Danielle and Nina,
Saranac Laker Casey Claire Stumpf and Long Island native Faye Stratford have paved the
way for a strong crew of female flyers. Nice work ladies! Matt
