FROM THE EASTERN COMMITTEE DESK

Spring 2002

Dear Ski Friends,

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank those of you that have made contributions to the Eastern Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Fund this past season. Your contributions made a big difference in the programs and opportunities afforded to our junior jumpers.

I have been asked “Is too late to make a contribution?” Of course, the answer is “it's never too late”, as we are continuously striving to provide the best for our athletes.

Those wishing to participate may direct your contributions to: Eastern Ski Jumping & Nordic Combined Foundation, 8 John Brown Road, Lake Placid, NY 12946.

Thank you for helping to make our programs a success!

Sincerely,
Art Tokle, Jr.

A Visit to Harrachov, CZ

by Don West, Masters Competitor

The 2002 International Masters Championship (IMC) in Harrachov CZ started right after the World Championships of Ski Flying so Barbara and I joined the many Masters competitors who came early to watch the ski flying, which we had never witnessed. Winds cancelled two of the four days of flying but they did manage four rounds and it was spectacular.

In the IMC, 183 competitors from ten nations found good spring conditions, with warm days and freezing nights. It was a busy three days for me with K-90 and NC-40 meter competitions Thursday, K-70 on Friday, then Saturday a team competition followed by XC.

Masters means Old Boys and the oldest ski jumper in Harrachov was Norway's Olai Lie who was born in 1913 (you do the arithmetic!). Age groups start at age 30 and some of the young masters jump very well, but another Norwegian, Jan Heiberg (Class V, 50-54) matched the day's best with a ride of 88.5 meters.

With several of our U.S. IMC regulars spending all their available vacation time volunteering at the Olympics, I turned out to be the only U.S. jumper at the IMC, but I was honored with an invitation to join the Czechs in the team event. We visited Dresden before IMC and Prague after, and brought home pictures and memories along with a bronze medal for last place in Class VII on the K-90.

Go to the IMC web site for more words and pictures from Harrachov.
