Between the Colors ...
by Dan "Mouse" Warner

Well... another year is behind us. The East ran a terrific Junior Olympics. Many Eastern parents, as well as the NYSEF organizers (made up of NYSEF parents and interested people) put on a great event for skiers from all over the country and Canada. The Olympic Region Development Authority (ORDA) and its' staff also did a great job preparing the jumps and cross-country courses. It was too bad that several of the top eastern skiers had broken collar bones, but I think the Eastern kids represented us well.

Looking ahead to next winter, it will be an interesting one. With the Olympics in Salt Lake City things may change here in the East. Scheduling will be difficult at best. Most of the judges and hill crews will be in Utah. We will need to work together on these challenges to come up with a good plan for the sites as well as the athletes.

Funding the Eastern program is still a top issue. We must come up with a plan to stabilize our program financially. We are going to have to do this in a professional manner by either hiring someone or having a group of people to be responsible for this project.

It's now time for the summer season to begin. With the Olympics on the horizon, it should be an exciting year. Hopefully the East will be well represented on the Olympic Team. Good Luck!

Hopper Highlights

Hi Nordic Kids! So, the winter's over... now what?

"I made progress this past winter. There was so much jumping this year everyone got better. Some of my friends even made the JO Team. That was awesome! I even remember I did a teley in some of the meets. Coach Norris said I did it just right. But summer is coming with lots of fun. Maybe I'll think about ski jumping but I want to go to camp, hang out with my friends and do lots of other stuff. I could go over to Lebanon or maybe Lake Placid for some jumping but I'll think about it later."

Well, Hoppers, if this is what's going on in your mind, it's time to take five minutes and really think about it now. According to the experts and coaches, who have been involved for a while... you don't have to jump all the time in the summer. But, if you are 8 to 12 years old, the base for how you jump when you get older is really determined in this stage of your development. You don't have to move to Lake Placid when you are eight years old. What you do need to do, however, is to have some consistent training which means taking some time to plan to get a few jumps in on the hills with plastic matting. If you can get to a grasshopper camp in Placid or a Cannonball practice in Lebanon, DO IT! You can get ten to twenty jumps in a day of summer jumping on a K18/25 meter hill. At a grasshopper camp that could be 40-80 jumps. If you do this a few times during the summer that will get you back on snow next winter with close to 150 jumps under your belt. It doesn't take a thousand jumps to make progress. That would probably burn you out. But 100 jumps during the summer could give you a big boost for next winter. So sit down with your coach or your parents and figure out what could work for you. Or call the Cannonball or Stoney and sign up. A few jumps now can be a big investment later on down the road. Have a great summer!

Thanks Guys!

"Thanks" to the Eastern Hill Crew who traveled to the Nationals in March. The weather was more like June, but somehow we pulled off the event. I had promised early work days but I didn't think it would be 3:00 am early! Call me Pinnochio! It was hard work but the Eastern guys (and the Intermountain guys like Gregor, Corby, and Chuck Heckert) did an outstanding job. And thanks to the skiers for helping to re-snow the K120 meter hill inrun. It took a lot to do what was needed to make the event go smoothly.

Members of the "Gold Medal" Eastern Hill Crew were Ken Barker, Jon Swanson, Reggie Lamson (Salisbury), Robin Atwater (Brattleboro), Jim "O'Hare" Carter (Andover), Herb Adams, Al Beane, Gary Arsenault (Rumford), Art Tokle, Jr and "King Dude" Art Tokle, Sr (Rockaway). Thanks for the help!!!

Eastern Jumping Video
1997 - 2001

Elizabeth Lamb, sister of jumper Chris Lamb, has produced a remarkable montage of ski jumping and nordic combined photos, compiled into a mesmerizing 20-minute video. With the help of Eastern photographers, she has attempted to include every Eastern jumper and coach in the production. Her photos span the years 1997 to 2001. The video is accompanied by a pleasing sound track.

If you're a coach , jumper or nordic combiner, you will want a copy for your memorabilia collection (or to boost your ego). If you are the parent of a jumper, you DEFINITELY want to have this video, as it reproduces wonderful moments experienced during a jumping season.

The cost of the tape is $15 + $5 shipping (all proceeds benefit Eastern Ski Jumping). Checks should be made payable to Elizabeth Lamb. To order contact:
