Looking ahead to next winter, it will be an interesting one. With the Olympics in Salt Lake City things may change here in the East. Scheduling will be difficult at best. Most of the judges and hill crews will be in Utah. We will need to work together on these challenges to come up with a good plan for the sites as well as the athletes. Funding the Eastern program is still a top issue. We must come up with a plan to stabilize our program financially. We are going to have to do this in a professional manner by either hiring someone or having a group of people to be responsible for this project. It's now time for the summer season to begin. With the Olympics on the horizon, it should be an exciting year. Hopefully the East will be well represented on the Olympic Team. Good Luck!
Hi Nordic Kids! So, the winter's over... now what? "I made progress this past winter. There was so much jumping this year everyone got better. Some of my friends even made the JO Team. That was awesome! I even remember I did a teley in some of the meets. Coach Norris said I did it just right. But summer is coming with lots of fun. Maybe I'll think about ski jumping but I want to go to camp, hang out with my friends and do lots of other stuff. I could go over to Lebanon or maybe Lake Placid for some jumping but I'll think about it later." Well, Hoppers, if this is what's going on in your mind, it's time to take five minutes and really think about it now. According to the experts and coaches, who have been involved for a while... you don't have to jump all the time in the summer. But, if you are 8 to 12 years old, the base for how you jump when you get older is really determined in this stage of your development. You don't have to move to Lake Placid when you are eight years old. What you do need to do, however, is to have some consistent training which means taking some time to plan to get a few jumps in on the hills with plastic matting. If you can get to a grasshopper camp in Placid or a Cannonball practice in Lebanon, DO IT! You can get ten to twenty jumps in a day of summer jumping on a K18/25 meter hill. At a grasshopper camp that could be 40-80 jumps. If you do this a few times during the summer that will get you back on snow next winter with close to 150 jumps under your belt. It doesn't take a thousand jumps to make progress. That would probably burn you out. But 100 jumps during the summer could give you a big boost for next winter. So sit down with your coach or your parents and figure out what could work for you. Or call the Cannonball or Stoney and sign up. A few jumps now can be a big investment later on down the road. Have a great summer!
