Between the Colors ...
by Dan "Mouse" Warner

At the Fall Eastern Jump Committee Meeting held in Lake Placid during the Flaming Leaves Weekend there was good news and not so good news. The good news is that our Eastern athletes are jumping great. Our program is working. The bad news is that our resources are depleted. The money coming in is not making a dent in what we need to run a top-flight program. Revenues from Head Taxes are not even close to covering our on-going costs.

When I first started attending Eastern Committee meetings in the 80's, the program was subsidized by USSA. We used to get as much as $10,000 a year for the USSA funded regional coach to operate his budget and to fund the divisional program. Now we get zip.

Eastern must develop our own financial strategy. It is a reality that we have to deal with in order to put our program on sound financial footing again. I don't pretend to have the answers for this dilemma. But I will help to achieve our goals.

I would like to get a group together this winter during the Junior Olympics in Lake Placid to get something started to bring a working plan to the Eastern Spring meeting. The Eastern Jumping/Nordic Combined Program has been around for a long time. We need to see that it continue.

Ed. note: It's great that the "Mouse" is becoming a regular contributor to New Heights! We applaud his desire to address the persistant financial challenges faced in running the Eastern program. If you are interested in becoming a part of this group or have any ideas please contact Dan through the NYSEF office in Lake Placid during the winter or at his home in Rumford, P.O. Box 104, Rumford Center, Maine 04278

Hopper Highlights

Hi Nordic Kids! We have a great schedule for you this winter at hills all over the east. The Nordic Kids Festival in Salisbury will be especially exciting - a super weekend with meets for all age groups.

There's one thing you should think about this winter when you practice your jumping. A ski jump without a telemark landing is like a piece of pie without the ice cream or a piece of cake without the icing. Now is the time to learn this way of landing your jumps so it becomes automatic. A World Cup jumper without a "teley" is usually out of place and finishes back in the pack. Telemark landings are safer and they make a good jump great. A good way to learn "teleys" is on a snow bump in the outrun or in a ski play area. The Norwegians call this a "sprithopp". Try it on a small snow bump until you get it down and then put it in on the real jump hill. It feels so awesome to finish your jump with a "stylin' teley" and you get really good scores from the judges which helps you place better.
Have fun this season and put time in on your "teley"!!!

YOUTH SKI LEAGUE
The Youth Ski League (YSL)/Nordic Kids, formerly the Bill Koch League (BKL), has scheduled meets for young jumpers in Andover, Lebanon, Lake Placid, Gunstock and Salisbury this winter. Please refer to the winter schedule.

YOUTH SKI LEAGUE SUMMER TOURNEE
Congratulations to Sam Burke of Lebanon Outing Club as the 2000 New England Summer Ski Jump and Dion Cup Champion! It sure is fun to watch this “hopper” fly!

Road Trip Review
by Willy Graves, JII/NC, BOC

This September after a summer of jumping in Lake Placid I traveled with nine other members of the Eastern team to Coleraine, Minnesota to jump on their K70 meter hill. We left Lake Placid after a quick supper and drove all night. The next day we stopped to take a look at Copper Peak ski flying hill in Ironwood, Michigan. I think that most of the skiers on the trip agree with me that we would like to jump it if they ever open it up again.

After a van ride of 23 hours we finally got to Coleraine and everybody looked at the jump and had different opinions about the hill, but mostly everybody was impressed. The whole team was out training in the days that followed with the exception of Chris Decker who was out with a ankle injury. Everybody was jumping well. Robbie Goodwin had some of the longest jumps of his life. Our best East jumpers were Brian Welch and Jeremy Carter. They were putting some jumps past the K point.

WILLY AT STEAMBOAT JO'S, MARCH 2000
On the day of the Summer Nationals competition, Clint Jones from Steamboat won with jumps of 72 and 73.5 meters and 245.6 points. Trey Oxford from Park City was second with jumps of 69 and 68 meters and 217.4 points. Jim Denney from Duluth rounded off the top three with jumps of 63.5 and 70.5 meters and 214.3 points. Our top Eastern finisher was Brian Welch in seventh place with 202.7 points followed by Jeremy Carter in 13th place with 172.6 points. It was not a very good day for Chris Decker in 18th place with 155 points. I placed in 20th place with 135.4 points and Marshall Ambrose was in 22 place with 126.6 points. Matt Cook, making a comeback this summer, placed 23rd with 124.4 points. Evan Bliss was in 27th place with 117 points with Matt Delaney right behind him in 28th place with 107.1 points. Robbie Goodwin rounded out the eastern jumpers in 33rd place with 84.9 points. Directly after the awards ceremony we all hopped in the van for a day-long van trip home with Larry at the wheel.
