STONEY'S CORNER

by Larry Stone, NYSEF/Eastern Jumping Coach

Another winter has passed and it's time to plan for the summer. I have worked up a tentative summer schedule and am proposing a new approach to this summer's training which will be in the form of naming a development team including ages down to J-III. There will be certain criteria which the skier will have to subscribe to such as camp attendance, training logs which will be monitored at every camp, progress in physical training as measured by testing, and on-hill performance both in meets and in general technical progress. At the end of the summer/fall training season and after Flaming Leaves, an Elite Team will be named which will receive support and accelerated training opportunities during the winter. We are currently looking for funding and sponsor support for this group. If any of you have ideas for sponsors, especially in terms of uniforming, please contact me. The Eastern Head Tax which each hill site pays from their meets goes towards this end. It will be a multi-tiered system so that even J-III's may benefit from this proposal as well as keeping Seniors involved. The development team will be named in the next issue of New Heights in early June and the criteria and base for this plan explained. Both Jumpers and Nordic Combiners will be included and will involve OTC qualification. The development team will not be an exclusive group but rather an inclusive one from which a smaller group will be picked in the late fall. If you are willing to make the commitment and you are not included, get in touch with me. We encourage participation rather than limit it. To make it the next level, you will need to show initiative and effort.

Looking back at the winter, it appears Eastern Ski Jumping is back on the up- swing. This sport has always had a cyclical nature to it and it looks like we are back on the right side of the cycle. A group of young skiers have stepped up to the bigger hills and results at JO's improved from last year. This is a good sign!

It is hard to balance all the factors of becoming a top ski jumper with all the elements of being a kid. For this reason there will be opportunities available for those skiers who want to see where they can go with this sport but also opportunities for those who don't want to make a big commitment now. Life gets serious soon enough! For whatever level of commitment that interests you, I hope this schedule will give you the opportunities you need. When you are making your summer plans, take a good look at what you can reasonably do and schedule accordingly. As usual, OTC use demands getting touch with me at least two weeks in advance and preferably sooner. So, let's look to summer and see what we can accomplish. See you on the hill (or at the gym)!

(See schedule of summer training camps.)

CONGRATULATIONS to Easterners Carl VanLoan, Jed Hinkley and Bill Demong, members of the Junior World Champion Nordic Combined Team! THANK YOU to Nick Dyslin and SWIX for their support this season.
We appreciate your generosity!

New Heights notes with sadness the passing of Ernie Dion, Lebanon ski jumping icon this past March. Our deepest sympathies to the Dion Family .
