USA Masters Ski Jumpers at IMC
Rosters, 1990 to 2009
|
We have looked through our archive of printed IMC results and assembled a roster of U.S. ski jumpers at each IMC since the inaugural 1990 event in Lake Placid.
Because our results are not quite complete, and because visual scans can miss names, we may have mistakes in the lists below. Further complicating matters, we have had people traveling with the team with no intention of skiing, and others who intended to ski but did not. Then there are people who submit their advance registrations by then don’t come to the IMC. (This was particularly prevalent at the two U.S. IMC’s in Lake Placid and in Steamboat Springs.)
The team rosters are printed below, with occasional team pictures. You will notice that IMC co-founder and U.S. Masters Chairman Earle Murphy traveled as Team Leader to many of the annual Championships even though his health did not permit him to participate on skis.

We see that as we entered the new millenium, the U.S. teams at IMC have been very small, and will remain small. Gone were the days when a dozen Old Boys fly off from USA to Europe to compete and socialize at IMC. During a particularly dark period, the U.S. had teams of just one or two skiers. However, starting in 2004, we see a modest recovery, with teams of four to six.
History in the Making in Rognan, NOR, 2000
The first ten years of IMC involved teams of Old Boys only from the northern
band of ski jumping nations: USA, CAN, NOR, SWE, FIN, EST, RUS. Even the 1995 IMC
in Zakopane, POL didn't attract skiers from central Europe. Later, a chance phone call
from ski historian Jens Jahn brought us in contact with one German Master, Kurt Brausse, described by Jens
as "a fine sportsman." It was our great delight in the small airport building in
Bødø, Norway, west of Rognan, to trip over a ski bag bearing the name "Kurt Brausse."
It turned out that just two German Masters had made the trip to Rognan: Kurt Brausse, the "fine sportsman", and Klaus Günther, who went on to serve as IMC Committee chairman for five years.
At IMC 2000 in Rognan, the team competition used five-man teams and the three U.S. jumpers had the honor of joining with the first two Germans at IMC to form an international team for that competition. Here is the team.

L-R:
Bart Lockhart,
Klaus Günther,
Don West,
Tim Denisson,
Kurt Brausse.
From the Rognan IMC, Kurt and Klaus went to Harrachov, CZ which has hosted a one day jump for Maters, the annual Veteraniada, where they spread the news about IMC. The following year, a larger team of German Masters skied in Rovaniemi, Finland, as did a four man team from the Czech Republic. The Czechs brought with them a bid to host the 2002 IMC in Harrachov, where the trickle of Old Boys from central Europe became a flood and participation doubled.
As of 2009, we have welcomed Masters from 21 nations to the IMC family.

In the first 20 IMC's only two U.S. skiers have competed in more than half. Tim Denisson has competed fourteen times and Don West has participated in sixteen of the twenty IMC's, bringing home 20 medals: 4 Gold, 10 Silver and 6 Bronze. (But he rushes to point out that 17 of the 20 medals were awarded for last place in his age group.)
