Pekka Tainio, Dec 18, 1950 - Jan 9, 2006
Hello from Finland,
I think that many of you remember our Finnish ski jumper and Nordic Combined skier Pekka Tainio.
Pekka fell during a competition last Friday in Saarijärvi. It didn't seem like a bad fall; he had a little blood on face, etc. but nothing was broken.
After the competition, driving home with his wife Kaija, in the town of Jyväskylä he suddenly lost consciousness.
It took only a short time to get to a nearby hospital where doctors discovered that Pekka had a widespread brain thrombosis.
His right side was completely paralyzed and he couldn't breathe without a machine.
We all prayed and hoped that he would recover, but Monday morning we got a sorrowful message - Pekka didn't make it.
Pekka was a great person and one of the icons in Finnish Masters ski jumping.
We hope that when you all are together with the Master skiers in your countries, you will take a little quiet moment for the memory of Pekka.
On behalf of Finnish Masters,
Erkki Ahtiainen,
President
Pekka Tainio, who turned 55 in December, participated in the IMC at least six years with great success, gathering ten medals and winning his Nordic Combined event four times in a row. Here are several podium pictures of this popular skier.
