The most powerful memory of the 2007 National Masters Championships in Iola will be the frigid wind which lasted for days, freezing the fingers and numbing the sensations. The official weather report during the competition was two degrees with 30 mph wind. The worst part was climbing the last 30 feet of the big hill tower, above the tree-tops, where the wind had a clear shot at the jumpers’ faces while tugging at the skis on their shoulders. The good news was all the rest: the sunshine, the nice snow, the well-cut tracks, and the wind shelter provided by the large evergreen trees behind and beside the big hill.
Twenty one Old Boys gathered at the beautiful Iola ski jumping bowl, ringed by five jumps from five meters to sixty meters in size. Seventeen of the jumpers survived training jumps and the oppressive cold to be listed in the final results. By rule, skiers could participate in up to two of the three events: 20, 40 and 60 meter jumping. The score sheet shows five skiers from the east and three from the Rocky Mountains (IMD & RMD) who competed with the Central Division Old Boys. First year master Wladyslaw Kwak of Norge Ski Club earned the top score on the big hill. Jack Gasienica, back on skis after several years sidelined by a knee injury, picked up where he left off, posting the top score on the 40 meter hill. A long-time Norge jumper, Jack is living in Park City and the environment obviously agrees with him. Welcome back, Jack!
The 2007 winter season started badly, with warm weather covering the eastern half of the U.S. Several competitions were postponed or cancelled before cold weather finally arrived. Still very little snow fell, forcing jumping clubs to turn to man-made snow. In spite of all of this, snow conditions in Iola were perfect!
When the jumping was over, the Old Boys posed for a group picture and then retired to the Club chalet for their other favorite activity, drinking beers and telling lies.

The Iola Winter Sports Club deserves a big "Thank You" for picking up the Masters event on short notice when the intended host decided that they were spread too thin and bowed out. Tom Ricchio and the rest of the Iola club members did a great job so that the Masters could compete in good conditions. As in 2003, the hosts folded the Masters events in with the annual Badger State Games and a good time was had by all, in spite of the cold.
