The First Summer Ski Jumping in New England

"New England’s first summer ski jumping tournament was written into the records on July 24, 1949 and everyone, competitors and spectators alike, had a grand time. The skies were sunny and it was pleasantly warm, when more than five thousand people gathered at the Belknap Mountain Recreation Area, Gilford, N. H., to see this event."  (From the 1950 American Ski Annual. Read the whole Story.)
Late in 2010, Carol Anderson sent us an article on this summer jump from the Laconia Evening Citizen, which included complete results of the competition. We have added the story and the results to the page containing the story from the American Ski Annual.

"The only thing that could have been better to make conditions perfect would have been no wind." [Notice the flag standing out straight!]

The picture above is one of about ten pictures of the Gilford ski jumps that you can see on a large annotated photo page showing dozens of scenes at Belknap ski area. The images are largely from period post cards. many of the pictures are large so if your internet service isn't lightning fast, you will experience the world-wide wait. [ See them now ]
